Palazzo Reale di Napoli

Palazzo Reale di Napoli is a historic royal palace situated in Piazza del Plebiscito, reflecting centuries of Naples’ political and cultural history. First construction started in 1600, but the building in its current form was finished in 1858. The palace was the residence of Spanish and Austrian envoys until 1734, the Burboun dynasty from 1734 to 1860, and the Savoy family after 1861. The palace was sold to the state of Italy in 1919 by Vittorio Emanuele III, which eventually turned the building into a museum featuring the royal apartments and the seat of the Italian National Library.

The exterior facade features eight statues, representing prominent Neapolitan rulers before the unification of Italy. Inside the palace, visitors can explore grand rooms, period furnishings, and architectural details that offer insight into the city’s royal past. These renovations, completed after the Second World War, show the tastes and fashion of the various rulers who occupied the apartments over their history. The experience is spacious and unhurried.

The museum opens daily at 9 am, though it is closed on Wednesdays, January 1, and December 25. This landmark is best for first-time visitors and those interested in Naples’ royal heritage and architecture.
